Linux Ubuntu Anime – 01

Writing this on a Linux Box:

Day one a successful install on Ubuntu on my old Fujitsu Notebook. There is too much to cover in a single post but coming from a long time windows user and a little bit of Mac as well I am impressed that linux ubuntu can perform well even on an old Tablet PC notebook, furthermore its not a real Linux install since I am using Wubi and not on a true Linux Partition.

There will be more Linux Ubuntu post coming along in the coming months. Also grab this ubuntu-tan wallpaper from my flickr.

First the Bad:

Internet required to install additional software.
Installing Japanese Languages Screenshot

Not everthing works right out of the box, you will be asked to install various updates and patches to get things working at a same level as windows. But for me its no big deal since I had to install various multimedia codecs and other niffty apps to get myself comfortable with the OS even on Windows.

You will have to travel to the ubuntu forums now and then to get help and you will have to get into writing commands to the ‘terminal

Installing software is not easy, some apps are packached in a .Tar ball, .RPM and .deb I am ok with various install methods having worked a little with unix but to the average windows user that needs to install software luckily ubuntu ships with a Package Manager that allows you to search for cool and useful apps similar to Mozilla Firefox Addons Website

Flash uploading to Flickr and Zooomr stalls sometimes. Although there is a Flash Plugin for Linux things somethimes Stalls and there is a bug with the web upload in flickr on ubuntu when selecting files.

and now the…. WOW stuff

Wireless works right out of the box! instant Internet Surfing, The date and Clock is also very neat and detailed. even the temperature show up.

Firefox and Flash works. I had to install a flash addon but it was no trouble. Same experience as using FireFox on PC or Mac

Youtube Flash works
Watching the RIZ-ZOAWD trailer on youtube. Gametrailers Flash videos also work.

Ubuntu does not take up too much memory she plays nice.

Overall I am still surprised that this was able to install rather easy on my XP Tablet PC machine using Wubi on a NTFS partition without formating my HDD. Currently right now I still have to boot into XP for my work but I think with linux ubuntu sitting alongside and doing a dual-boot option is not too bad. I intend to stick around with ubuntu for a longer while to see how much it can help with watching anime, internet & communications, blogging and simple light computer lifestyle tasks.

  1. I’ll have to use that wallpaper on my Kubuntu install on my laptop. Thanks for that =D As for the tarballs, RPMs, and DEBs, you should only need DEBs on Ubuntu. RPMs are intended for the Red Hat/Fedora/RHEL/CentOS systems (although others, such as Mandrake, I believe, use RPM). For Ubuntu, which is based on Debian, the DEB packages should be used, not RPM packages. If you want to install something you can only find available as an RPM and not as a DEB, however…

And when it comes to tarballs, that’s getting into the realm of compiling source code there, which I’d recommend people avoid unless they have an interest in it. If you’re stepping into the *nix world, you might appreciate this XKCD comic. Then again, maybe it’s only funny when you get every reference =P

As a fellow *nix user (Red Hat, Fedora, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, FreeBSD, etc.), welcome to the club. Try not to break your system too much playing around under the hood ;) Don’t try to do anything overly complex with the backend, and it should be stable enough to use!

Congrats! I never tried Wubi but it seems to work well for you! Linux has come a long way in a few years. So many ways to use it.
